Thousands Experiencing Power in South-East Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Powerful Storms

Around twenty-five thousand homes in southeastern Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the state, bringing powerful gusts topping 109km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Damage

Residents witnessed substantial frozen pellets reaching sizes of 7cm in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that multiple regions across Queensland had been affected by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with nearly 70 crews working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 residents in the southern state also experienced power outages after the capital city saw its heaviest rainfall in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams handled 598 calls for help across the state, mainly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

Most Impacted Locations

  • The Werribee area - saw considerable storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing - multiple emergency calls
  • Wyndham area - nearly 180 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, more than 28,000 power users in the state were experiencing outages.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were expected to linger along much of the state's eastern regions this week as a atmospheric system continued to attract humidity against the coast.

Tuesday was expected to become the wettest day, with continued storm activity expected across multiple regions of both states.

Safety Concern

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after past events where comparable situations led to significant health impacts in the area.
