The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Music Fans

Marking 20 years since the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try telling that anyone who has mastered the epic lengthy instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise that had a significant impact on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – RedOctane had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Northern Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, however once it got included in the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still not available in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew were playing the song on the tour bus, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related lore, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over half a million units upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay but an array of personalization features. This track is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce had already completed a successful tour before their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that we were records were moving like crazy,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has threatened to overshadow everything else the band has done. Recently, the song featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique musical journey and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact of a Plastic Guitar

The best marketing, be it for automobiles, apparel or games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s expectations of something from the founders in development. A new studio has begun production on their first music game. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace another game following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games could be similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to persist with new generations.”
