Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
